Neighbors, Soapbox.
Dear Soapbox:
The Miami Beach High School expansion plans include the recently completed
parking lot along Dade Boulevard and Prairie Avenue. The parking lot was raised
24 inches and has contributed to massive flooding in the lower Prairie Avenue area.
High School officials keep denying the fact that their faulty design has caused
widespread flooding in the adjacent neighborhood. The neighbors have said this is
the case for two years now.
These photos were taken on May 20th showing that the drains the school installed
fail during large rain events. Although, they are required by code to "contain" all
their storm water, due to the profile and layout of the parking lot, it overflows into the
neighborhood. These photos show that the drains actually reversed and
overflowed, helping to "fill" up Prairie Avenue. The School Board has been in
denial that they have a problem, but the photos clearly show differently. I hope that
the engineers from the City of Miami Beach and the School Board can take action
and resolve these issues before additional right-of-way improvements are finalized.
Sincerely,
John Corey
